Customer-Oriented Service Networks

The electric power industry is reaching beyond traditional generation, transmission and distribution functions to include power marketing, energy services, and information technology-based services and products; all geared to providing greater customer value and retaining their customers in a competitive market. We envision a transformation of the traditional electricity supply network into the bundled delivery of power, information and related services. Such networks will enable real-time access to relevant market information, as well as innovations leading to process and energy efficiency enhancements. A "smart" facility in the future will employ microprocessors embedded in major process components, linked with intelligent controllers and electronic metering/communications systems. The integrating system will analyze facility performance, diagnose equipment problems and recommend needed service, and identify cost effective choices for materials and energy inputs. For example, the energy customer with suitable equipment will be armed with the information to make informed choices between natural gas and electricity energy options during periodic price fluctuations. Real-time communications via radio frequency, fiber, or power line carrier will strengthen alliances between customers and their power and energy service providers and provide greater value for both the energy buyer and seller.
